São diversas as denominações que brasileiros dão para subemprego, mas as mais famosas são: trabalho informal ou vaga que europeu não quer. Na maioria das vezes os brasileiros se referem ao subemprego de forma negativa, mas será que recorrer a um trabalho aquém da sua qualificação durante o intercâmbio é tão ruim assim?
There are several denominations Brazilians give to underemployment, but the most popular are: informal job or job Europeans don’t want. Most of the time Brazilians refer to underemployment in a negative way, but do you think to apply for this kind of job below your qualification during your exchange program is really that bad?

Based on this we say with conviction that appealing for underemployment is not bad at all, there’s nothing wrong with that choice, as long as this underemployment doesn’t affect your health, of course.
Devemos lembrar que empregos como ajudante de cozinha, babá, faxineiro, entregador de jornal, plaqueiro etc., são funções que existem em grande quantidade no Brasil como em qualquer lugar do mundo. Por serem funções tão comuns e necessárias, você não deve se sentir inferiorizado por aceitar uma dessas posições.
We must remember jobs as kitchen porter, au pair programs, floor assistant, paper boy, sign holder, etc., are jobs which already exist in your country as anywhere in the world. Because it’s so common and important, you should not feel inferior because you accepted a position like that.
Trabalhar nesses “subempregos” para se manter no exterior é uma realidade muito mais comum do que se pensa quando falamos de programas de intercâmbio, não só na Irlanda, mas em qualquer outro país.
Working on these “underemployment” positions to keep you living abroad is a much more common reality than you think when it comes to exchange programs, it’s not only in Ireland but in any other country.
São nesses subempregos que você vive a rotina de um restaurante, de uma casa de família, conhece os costumes locais, as regulamentações e práticas utilizadas, fatores que são fundamentais para a sua vivência no exterior e que agregarão valor considerável ao seu currículo.
It’s on the underemployment that you live the routine of a restaurant, a family home, you know the local culture, the regulations and practices used, factors that are fundamental for your experience abroad and will add considerable value to your resume.

É importante compreender que os subempregos acabam acontecendo por períodos temporários, como é o caso do intercâmbio. Desta forma, entender que você não atuará naquela posição pela vida toda facilitará – e muito – a forma com que você lidará com a situação, pois terá a certeza de que aquilo terá fim. Aliás, se fosse uma experiência tão ruim não existiriam tantos estudantes renovando seus vistos ano após ano.
It’s important to understand that underemployment ends up happening for temporary periods, as is the case of the exchange program. As a result, understanding that you won’t be in that position for the rest of your life will make it much easier for you to deal with the situation, because you’ll be sure that one day it’ll be over. In fact, if it was that bad there wouldn’t be so many students renewing their visas year after year.
Além disso, o trabalho informal é a realidade da maioria dos intercambistas que decidem se aventurar pelo mundo, uma vez que a barreira linguística precisa ser suplantada para que seja possível, então, almejar oportunidades melhores. No final das contas, estamos todos no mesmo barco: estudantes vivendo em país estrangeiro, com regras a cumprir — especialmente aquela que limita as horas de trabalho a 20 semanais durante o período de aulas.
Besides, informal jobs are part of reality of most exchange students who decide to venture around the world, since the language barrier must be overcome so that better opportunities can be sought. At the end of the day, we’re all in the same boat: students living in a foreign country, with rules to follow – especially one that limits working hours to 20 weekly during the study period.

Um dos aspectos mais interessantes da vida dos intercambistas é justamente o fato de viverem de forma totalmente inusitada e diferente da que se tinha no Brasil. É aí que aprendemos a valorizar coisas que a gente nem dava conta quando estávamos no conforto do nosso país, circundado de amigos e caras conhecidas falando a nossa língua materna.
One of the most interesting aspects of exchange students’ life is precisely the fact that they live in a totally unusual way and different from the one in their home country. This is how we learn to value things we didn’t even realize when we were in the comfort of our country, surrounded by friends and familiar faces speaking our mother tongue.

Nem sempre é fácil!
It’s not always easy!
Nos primeiros três dias de emprego o Victor quase desistiu. O primeiro pensamento dele era: “complicado estudar cinco anos de engenharia no Brasil e acabar lavando louça em outro país”. Passado um tempo, ele percebeu que isso fazia parte da escolha de fazer um intercâmbio. Se você perguntar se ele gostou do trabalho, a resposta será negativa. Entretanto, sem qualquer sombra de dúvidas, afirmamos que a experiência é única!
For the first three days of his job, Victor almost gave up. His first thought was “it’s difficult to study five years of engineering in Brazil and end up doing dishes in another country.” After a while, he realized it was part of the choice of enrolling in an exchange program. If you ask him if he liked his job, the answer will be no. However, without a doubt, we affirm that the experience is unique!
Tamanha era a nossa vontade de guardar dinheiro para viajar que, mesmo tendo um emprego pesado no restaurante, o Victor passou a entregar comida à noite com a bicicleta dele. E é nessas horas que você mede o seu esforço quando tem um propósito, pois vê exatamente o que é capaz de fazer a fim de atingi-lo. Todavia, esta é uma questão bastante subjetiva, pois cada um sabe qual é a própria necessidade e tem consciência de quanto esforço é capaz de fazer para alcançar os seus objetivos.
Such was our desire to save money to travel that even having a hard job in the restaurant, Victor started working as delivery guy with his bicycle. And it’s time like these you measure your effort when you have a purpose, because you understand what it takes to achieve it. However, this is a very subjective matter, since each one knows your own needs and are aware of how much effort it’s required in order to achieve goals.

Do you remember that it’s temporary?
Pois é… A vaga que o Victor conseguiu no restaurante, cujas tarefas eram pesadas o bastante, e que era muito abaixo das expectativas dele, pode não ter sido ideal, mas proporcionou ao Victor a evolução do inglês básico para o fluente, bancou aquele mochilão dos sonhos, além de ter possibilitado uma “pesada” bagagem cultural e um amadurecimento emocional — e de vida — que ele jamais teria alcançado no conforto do seu trabalho promissor no Brasil. O legal é que depois de um tempo trabalhando como kitchen porter ele foi promovido a sub Chef e passou a se apaixonar cada dia mais por gastronomia. Hoje, inclusive, ele até pensa em se formar nessa área, pois ele descobriu uma nova paixão! <3
Well… Victor’s position in the restaurant, which tasks were hard enough, and that’s far below his expectations, may not have been ideal, but gave to Victor the evolution from basic English to fluent, made the backpacking of our dreams happened, as well as enabled a “heavy” cultural baggage and an emotional maturation that he would never have achieved in the comfort of his promising work in Brazil. It’s nice to mention that after a while working as kitchen porter, Victor was promoted as sub Chef and he started falling in love more and more with gastronomy. He also thinks about graduating in this field, because he found a new passion! <3
Nossa dica é: mantenha sempre em mente o que te levou para o intercâmbio. Sejam quais forem os seus objetivos, você enfrentará desafios e o subemprego é apenas um deles.
Our tip is: always keep in mind what took you to the exchange programme. Whatever your goals are, you will face challenges, and underemployment is just one of them.

É muito comum as pessoas irem para a Irlanda com o sonho de fazer um belo “pé de meia” para voltar muito bem para o Brasil. O problema é que as pessoas parecem se esquecer de encarar a realidade, que não é tão fácil como parece. Empregos não caem do céu na Irlanda nem na China!
It’s very common for people to go to Ireland with the dream of making a nest egg to return in well financial conditions to home country. The problem is that people seem to forget to face the truth, which is not as easy as it sounds. Jobs aren’t a real godsend in Ireland or even in China!
Eu trabalhei em um escritório, assim como antes trabalhava no Brasil, mas ocupando um cargo consideravelmente mais baixo. Ainda assim, eu não era paga nem um centavo a mais, por hora, que o Victor que trabalhava em um restaurante. Não me importava em trabalhar como assistente administrativo/financeiro na Irlanda após ter saído de um emprego de coordenadora de importação no Brasil. O meu intuito, assim como o da maioria dos estudantes brasileiros na Irlanda, era realizar uma imersão cultural e aprimorar o inglês. Se trabalhar com o que eu trabalhei na época em Dublin era o que tinha de disponível para mim, eu não ia virar as costas por simples capricho.
I worked in an office, just as I used to work in Brazil, but in a considerably lower position. Still, I was not been paid a penny more, per hour, than Victor who worked in a restaurant. I didn’t mind working as an administrative/financial assistant in Ireland after leaving a job as an import coordinator in Brazil. My goal, like most foreigner students in Ireland, was to immerse myself in culture and improve my English. If working in that position back then in Dublin was what it was available to me, I was not going to turn my back due to a whim.
Não é à toa que o fato de ter realizado um intercâmbio aumenta — e muito — as suas chances de abocanhar uma boa vaga no Brasil, pois além da questão idioma, os entrevistadores sabem muito bem que uma experiência no exterior proporciona uma bagagem valiosa, que inclui, entre outras coisas, uma visão mais apurada e complexa de mundo, flexibilidade para lidar com adversidades e outros tantos fatores que você aprenderá “na marra” ao estar em um país completamente diferente do seu.
It’s no wonder that the fact of having attended an exchange program increases – significantly – your chances getting a better job in your country, because beyond the language matter, the interviewers understand very well that an experience abroad provides valuable background, which includes, among other things, a more sophisticated and complex worldview, flexibility to deal with adversity and so many other factors that you will learn not in an easy way when you are in a country completely different from yours.
Por isso, a dica é que você agarre a oportunidade que aparecer, pois emprego está difícil em todo lugar e o intercâmbio não durará a vida toda, mas o suficiente para que, lá na frente, além da bagagem, você tenha muita história para contar, geralmente com situações muito desafiadoras e muitos relatos de superação.
So the tip is that you leap at the opportunity that comes up, because employment is difficult everywhere and the interchange will not last a lifetime, but enough for in the future, besides the background, you have a lot of story to tell, usually with very challenging situations and many about overcoming.
